Candy, Candy, Candy!

Along with everything else, I’ve been trying to get one moving-related task done every day. Last night, I wrangled the kids together to help me get my candy machine moved upstairs and set up. This project actually began Monday evening with a trip to Sam’s Club. Sam’s is bad enough when you go in the middle of the day and it’s not crowded, but in the evenings, it’s beyond frustrating. I kept my Type A personality hidden in my back pocket for as long as I could, but after waiting in the checkout line for almost 20 minutes, I’d had… (read more)

Multiple Mileage Milestones

Last week, both Susan and I hit major mileage milestones in our automobiles. First up is my Chevy Avalanche, which rolled 100,000 miles. I bought the Avalanche right after Christmas in 2005, so it’s been on the road for essentially six years and two months. In February of 2009 when I got tires, I had roughly 51,000 miles on the truck (approximately 1,342 miles/month). Today, the truck has been on the road for 74 months, and my average is 1,351 miles/month. I’m not sure how many states my truck has been to, but I’ve driven it to Las Vegas, Chicago,… (read more)

The Phantom Menace in 3D

In 1997 the original Star Wars movie was re-released in theaters, 20 years after it was originally released. I already owned the movie on VHS at that point — several copies, in fact — but there’s something about seeing movies (and those movies in particular) in a theater with a huge screen, loud speakers, and a room full of Star Wars fans. Waves of toys and re-releases of the original trilogy into theaters in the late 90s were all designed to drum up interest for the Star Wars prequels, Episodes 1-3. The first of those movies, The Phantom Menace, opened… (read more)

Valentine’s Day Box 2012: Angry Birds

I don’t remember whether it was me, Susan, or Mason who suggested that we make an Angry Birds-themed Valentine’s Day box for Mason this year, but that’s what was decided on. This is our fourth (in as many years) video game-themed boxes. In 2011 we made an iPad, in 2010 we made a Nintendo DS, and the year before that in 2009 we made a Nintendo Wii. Here’s how our Angry Birds Valentine’s Day Box turned out … … and here’s how we got there. We started with a “simple” paper mache balloon that didn’t turn out to be so… (read more)

Sayonara, Shinobi.

And no, not the damaged Shinobi machine that I recently broke into a million pieces. This weekend, I sold traded away my good Shinobi machine. Back in 2003, I went to a video game auction and bought two arcade machines: Bucky O’Hare, and Shinobi. I bought Bucky O’Hare on a whim because Bucky’s last name was so similar to my own, but Shinobi had been a childhood favorite of mine. The game was released in 1987, right around the height of my “ninja phase”. Something about the game clicked with me. I enjoyed it then, and now. When I bought… (read more)

Superbowl Sunday

Last Sunday, Dad came over and joined us for the 2012 Super Bowl. We were all rooting for the Chicago Bears, but since they weren’t playing, none of us cared who won or lost. Instead we just ate a lot and had a good time visiting. We started off with these ribeyes, which Susan cooked out on the grill for us. Good thing Dad and I both like “rare,” as getting these done in the middle would have taken a while! That’s not all we had though! The taquitos, boneless wings, and Rotel cheese dip were pretty good too! And,… (read more)

Universe, Don’t Let Me Down

The single most frustrating part of collecting arcade games has been the amount of maintenance it takes to keep them running. As a kid I had no idea how much time and effort was spent in keeping these machines running — then again back then when these machines were new, I suspect they weren’t quite so fragile. Sometimes it’s the cold of winter that does them in; sometimes, the heat of summer. Moving them always makes me nervous. I can’t tell you how many machines I’ve bought in working condition in other states, only to have them arrive in Oklahoma,… (read more)

Where’s Robbo?

I’m still around, promise. Our recent move has added close to an hour to our daily commute time. Between that and the never ending task of unpacking boxes, and I just haven’t had much time to write lately. Oh, and I got around 15 hours of overtime this week. So, bleh. Here’s to next week.
