Back in the Swing

Last week was our yearly “Staycation”. Each Memorial Day week, the kids’ daycare closes the entire week, leaving us without childcare. Typically I take two days of vacation and Susan does the same, but this year Susan took some additional time so the week ended up more like a stay at home vacation. We did lots of cool stuff with the kids. We went to the bombing memorial museum downtown, we went to the movies, we went to the sprayground, we went to the movies … basically, the kids had a good time running around Oklahoma City.

After having five days off in a row, I went back to work on Thursday. I worked two days, had two more days off, and then hit the road yesterday. I’m working this week in Denver. I’m staying in the coolest extended stay hotel ever. Dad (who rode with me) and I had dinner at a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant last night which was good. I guess the biggest news was, half an hour after we arrived some giant power transformer downtown exploded. We could see the tower of smoke from our hotel window (we were about five miles south of the smoke). News reports said there were flames 40-50 feet tall, but we couldn’t see them from where we were. While driving around after dinner we ended up in the same part of town where the explosion had been. The loss of power was obvious (traffic lights out, entire neighborhoods without lights) but fortunately the traffic wasn’t too bad.

Not much else to say. It’s been kind of slow around here lately. I’ll try to crank things back up.
