No Longer Demented

After 40 years of dishing up weird and wacky tunes, Dr. Demento’s radio show is coming to an end. I suppose it’s ironic that I read about this in the Tulsa World, as Oklahoma’s Clear Channel stations dropped Dr. Demento’s show years ago (which, I suppose, is the problem).

Back in high school I used to listen to the good Doctor Sunday nights on 107.7 (KXRO), and I remember being disappointed when they quit airing the show. According to the official website, there are (er, were) only six radio stations still carrying the show. Everyone interested in still listening to the show (like myself) has been forced to download recordings of the broadcasts via the Internet.

And speaking of the Internet, that’s where he’s heading. According to DrDemento.com, for $2/week (good luck with that), the Doctor’s demented followers will be able to get new Internet-based episodes of the show. I didn’t feel bad at all about downloading recordings of radio broadcasts, but I won’t download them if he’s selling them.

Growing up, we had a couple of silly song compilations (like Goofy Gold) and I have several of Dr. Demento’s CD compilations (yes, originals) that he’s released throughout the years that both I and my kids enjoy (Susan, not so much).

I have a love/hate relationship with the show. I like that it is out there, but I hate how many songs are repeated again and again. I cannot count the times I have heard Dead puppies or they are coming to take me away ha ha. UGH! Change it up some, Doctor!

The last 6 months, I’ve been a member of the society and downloaded many shows. I paid the yearly flat fee instead of the monthly or per show fee. We will have the shows playing on Fri/Sat nights when a friend will come over and play video games. Some shows are good and others fall very flat. The best part of the show tends to be the bonus content for subscribers. It is 15-20 after the radio portion. The Doctor plays some decent tunes that he doesn’t play all too often.

I cannot imagine his radio listenership was too large as I think he was only on 6-8 stations before pulling the plug. I am not sure his subscription base is all too large either though.

  • My brother and I used to listen to that show every Sunday night as well. I don’t recall what station it was on in Dallas/Fort Worth back in the day, but it was the first place I heard Fish Heads, Another One Rides the Bus, etc. Great memories!

I used to tape that show on Sunday nights like my life depended on it! Just so I could listen to it three or four more times before the new one aired. Wow! I would never have learned Existential Blues without inspiration from the Doctor!

To this day, when people ask me what my sign is, I blink and tell them “neon”.
