Project: 365

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to take a new picture every single day of 2013 and post them all online. I’ve seen other people attempt this before, but an acquaintance of mine (Melissa from MelKarlbergphotography.com) did this so successfully last year that it inspired me to try it myself.

I’ve spent the last couple of days trying to figure out technically the best way to do this. Rather than going with Facebook, I decided to use the photo album software I already have installed on my web server to host the pictures. I decided I didn’t want to directly tie this project into Facebook. I want non-Facebook users to be able to easily view and/or comment on the photos if they wish, and five years from now, if Facebook is no longer King of the Social Media sites, I still want the album to exist as it was originally posted.

My other concern was driving off you guys with a flood of updates. Nothing gets a person kicked off my Twitter feed faster than posting a dozen updates in a row, something I don’t want to do to you guys either. So, here’s how I’ve decided to handle it.

01. I added a link to the left hand menu called The 365/2013 PROJECT at the bottom of the “Pages and Links” section. Any time you want to see the pictures, you can click on that link. I’ll be numbering the pictures 001 through 365 so they should appear both numerically and chronologically in order.

02. At the end of each month I will post a reminder to go check out that month’s pictures. That’ll only be 12 reminders a year instead of 365. That shouldn’t be too bad.

03. For those of you that use RSS the photo album has its own RSS feed. Simply add the link to your RSS reader of choice and you’ll get to see a new picture (hopefully) every day.

Each picture will have a caption to explain what the picture is about or who is in it, but because of the way my web gallery software works, it’s really easy to add photos and a big pain in the butt to add captions. For the first 5-10 minutes a picture is online it probably won’t have a caption, so if you see one without one that’s probably what’s up.

Some of the photos will be taken with my DSLR camera. Some of them will come from my iPhone. Some of them will be staged. Some of them will capture action. I don’t know what some most of them will be. What I do hope is that by the end of 2013 I’ll be able to look back and see a pictorial summary of the entire year.

To kick things off, here’s the first picture I posted.
