Petrol Predicament

A month or so ago, Susan and the kids were quite late coming home from work. I tried calling her cell phone multiple times and got no answer. Being who I am, I eventually got in the car and drove back to work, backtracking to make sure she wasn’t stranded on the side of the road somewhere. I was really pissed by the time she finally got home, and was told that I had over reacted, that she was a big girl and could take care of herself, and that I was out of line for getting so upset about the ordeal. Point taken. My only point was that we had just bought her a $500 cell phone, so it would be nice if she would use it if she was going to be an hour late (when I had seen her leaving work at the same time as myself).

Fast forward to last night. Susan usually gets home around 5:30pm, same as me. At 5:45, was I worried when she wasn’t there? Nope, I just kept surfing the internet. Was I concerned at 6pm when they hadn’t shown up? Nope, I just flipped on the television. At 6:10pm, a strange car pulled into the driveway and I saw Susan and the kids getting out of it. She had run the car out of gas and had to get a ride home. And her $500 cell phone? At home, on the kitchen counter.

After getting a hold of someone to come over and watch the kids (thanks Liz), we found a gas can, got a gallon of gas at 7-11, and went back to get the Rodeo. Now I don’t know if you remember this but one person in our family (me) has been hit by a car while standing on the side of the interstate, so as I was fueling up the car I kept flinching every time a car drove anywhere near where I was standing. So after putting the gallon of gas in … the car still wouldn’t start. So, we went back to get more gas to put in. After another 2 gallons (I think we were parked on a hill), the car started right up. We finally got home an hour or so later.

Several people who drove by honked and flipped us off, as if we had planned the side of the road as a good place to refuel the car. Right. Tomorrow, we’re going to park in the median to wash our cars. Yeah, right. Ah well. All’s well that ends well.
