Goodwill Hunter’s Genesis Shelves

Goodwill Hunter is a man after my own heart. When you fill up your shelves, you don’t get rid of things — you build more shelves! Here is another example of shelf building by Goodwill Hunter. This guy is to shelves what I am to … writing about shelves. Take it away, GWH! The shelves I originally built are now overflowing, so I needed to make another set of shelves to replace one of the two remaining store-bought bookshelves in my gameroom. A few adjustments to my original plans in the following set of shelves: Here they are filled with… (read more)

Goodwill Hunter’s Custom Game Shelves

The following tutorial, originally posted by Goodwill Hunter on Digital Press, was one of the original inspirations for this website. GWH did a terrific job of utilizing the space he had available, and the finished product looks completely professional. So good, in fact, that I once threatened to kidnap Mr. Hunter, chain him up in my garage, and force him to build fantastic shelves for me for all eternity. If only I could find him. With that, I’ll let him take it from here: As a result of acquisitions at the Midwest Gaming Classic, the Circuit City $4.99 Sale, and… (read more)

Trim Upgrade

Yesterday, Destri over at The Mother Huddle demonstrated upgrading a cheap set of shelves by adding trim to them. It’s definitely a topic I’ve been wanting to cover, and since hers came out better than mine I decided to show off hers instead. The first thing Destri did was pick up these cheap (and cheap looking) shelves from Hobby Lobby. According to her post, both combined cost her less than $12. Next, she picked up a miter box and some spare trim. I have this same miter box. It costs around $8, and comes with a hand saw. It’s plastic,… (read more)

MachineGex’s Corner NES Shelves

When reader Tom (MachineGex) saw this oddly-shaped corner in his game room, he did what any of us would do — he squeezed some custom shelves in there to display his massive collection of Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) games! From Tom: “The NES shelf is actually two separate shelves. If you look at the bottom, you can see how I used the left over shelf pieces to fill the space between the two shelves. I just put extra shelves in between them, and no one can tell that it is actually not one big shelf (see second picture for a… (read more)

TEEBooks Invisible Shelves

Unlike many of us who take pride in showing off our shelves, TEEBooks’ approach is to hide the shelves altogether.

Flat Screen TV Shelf

One of the things I miss most about my old, gigantic CRT television is how much crap I could stack, pile, and balance on top of it. Modern flat screen televisions just don’t have the same footprint on top to hold speakers, remotes, and Wii sensor bars! Over the past week I’ve seen two different brands of shelves for your flat screen television, so I thought I would share them. First up is the ScreenDeck. As you can see, the ScreenDeck uses the mounting holes on the back of your flat screen television for the shelf’s rails. The shelf is… (read more)

Pac-Shelf

This shelf is giving me Pac-Man fever, and to be perfectly honest, it’s driving my crazy! Designed by Italian artist Mirko Ginepro, the Pac-Man Shelf is the perfect shelf for any fan of video games. To be honest, I think this thing would look a lot better with some Pac-Man/video game collectibles displayed on it (or at least some video games). Although no price is listed on the creator’s website, the shelves are custom-made by an artist and would be shipped from Italy. Even though I can’t speak Italian, I assume this translates to, “I can’t afford them.” Your best… (read more)

Garage Shelves from Lowes

In 12 hours we’ve received 12 inches of snow here in Oklahoma. This morning I spent a little time warming up in the garage while taking a snow-shoveling break, and thought I would snap and share a couple of pictures of the shelves I use out in my garage. These are Edsal Steel Freestanding Shelving Units, which I purchased from Lowes for $66 each. I own three of these units — this is two of them. Unlike some of the cheaper shelving units you may run across, these are heavy duty enough to stand on their own. I actually use… (read more)

Wall of Windows Shelves

Think an entire wall of shelves makes a room too dark? Think again! These Swedish shelves not only take up an entire wall, but allow the home owners to still see out through the windows! I wouldn’t store any collectibles that might fade in directly sunlight on them, but for glassware, books, and other household items, I think they’re pretty wizard! Source: Gizmodo.com

Garage Shelves for Rubbermaid Tubs

Shortly after moving into our new home, I decided to build some shelves to hold all of my Rubbermaid Tubs. Rubbermaid storage tubs are great for storing stuff: they’re cheap, waterproof, and stack nicely. Unfortunately, they stack a little too nicely, which makes it difficult to retrieve things from the bottom of the stack! I couldn’t find any good guides to building garage shelves on the Internet, so after a little planning this is what I came up with. I can’t say that these are the greatest looking or best laid out shelves ever, but what I CAN say is… (read more)
