Post-Halloween

Halloween 2005 was a success! Mason (dressed as Mace Windu from Star Wars) and I hit the streets along with Susan’s sister Becky (dressed as a witch), Mason’s cousin Dylan (Freddy Krueger) and his friend Caleb (Dracula), while Susan and baby Morgan (dressed as Princess Leia) stayed at home to hand out candy. I don’t know if it’s a difference in perceptions, a change over the times or a combination of the two, but in our neighborhood (which is full of families with kids) I would say there was about 25% participation. A few stretches had several homes in a row, and then there would be half a block where there wouldn’t be any lights on. For the most part people seemed to remember how Halloween works — if you’re participating, turn on your porch light and leave your front door open. If you’re not, shut your front door and turn your lights off. Several times Mason rang people’s doorbells only to find they didn’t have any candy. Morons.

By the end of the night, even though Mason’s hands were ice cold he still didn’t want to give up. Mason had already filled his plastic candy bucket (shaped like Darth Vader’s head) twice during “Haunt the Halls”, where the daycare takes the kids trick-or-treating through the tunnels under the FAA center. Last night he filled it a third time. When he got home, Mason laid down on his pillow in front of the television, started sorting his candy, and fell asleep in the middle of the floor. I guess the day-long sugar rush caught up with him.

Here is Mace Windu (Mason) and Princess Leia (Morgan) with their mommy.
