My Year in Review: A Look Back At 2014

People have said that the O’Haras are not happy unless they are busy. If that’s the case, our family stayed pretty happy in 2014. We did lots of things, went lots of places, and saw lots of stuff. Mason and Morgan turned thirteen and nine, while Susan and I both turned 41.

Last year we […]

Happy Halloween 2014!

Halloween snuck up on me this year. I truly love Halloween, from the traditions all the way to the decorations.

It’s really not Halloween until I start drinking out of this cup.

One thing we did last week for Halloween was go to Krispy Kreme and get some Ghostbusters-themed donuts.

Morgan and […]

October is Horror Movie Month!

Every year for the past ten years (at least) I’ve talked about watching 31 horror movies in October (one a night). Every year I come up with a reason not to do it. I can’t come up with a reason not to do it this year, so I’m going to try it.

To […]

Florida Vacation 2014 Day 1: Eatin’ and Drivin’

We hit the road bound for Florida on Saturday, driving east. I can summarize day one by saying that we ate and we drove.

We had breakfast at the Hungry House Cafe in Antlers, Oklahoma. The HUngry House Cafe is the best breakfast restaurant in Antlers. From what I understand, they are also the only […]

100 (Questionable) Movies for $15

I love shopping on Amazon, I love bargains, and I love bad movies — so when I recently stumbled across Mill Creek’s latest 100 Movie DVD packs, knowing well and good that they were probably terrible, I bought them anyway (so you wouldn’t have to).

The three packs I purchased were 100 Greatest Cult Classics, […]

The Fantasy Fiction Formula (Book and Podcast)

When I tell my friends that my writing professor (Deborah Chester) wrote the book on writing genre fiction, I’m being quite literal. Okay, so maybe she didn’t write the book on writing genre fiction, but she wrote a book on the subject, and a darned good one too. It’s called The Fantasy Fiction Formula, and […]

Parrot AR Drone 2.0

For my 41st birthday, I asked for (and received) a Parrot AR Drone 2.0. Yes, my birthday isn’t until the end of next week. Now that I’m over 40, I can open presents early if I want.

Starting at $300, the Parrot AR Drone 2.0 (“Parrot 2” hereon) is an intermediate level drone. There […]

Sculpting the Galaxy (Book)

There’s something about physical miniature models that CGI, at least currently, cannot seem to capture. There’s no doubt that computer graphics have opened up new world (both figuratively and literally) to filmmakers, but the way a physical model photographs on screen just has a feel to it that computers can’t always seem to duplicate.

Concerning Big Fun (Book)

In the mid 1990s, an anarchistic group of young men and women from the Philadelphia area moved into a rented farmhouse located in Charlottesville, Virginia. The house, dubbed “Big Fun” by its inhabitants, was the setting for what must have been some of the wildest debauchery Charlottesville, Virginia has ever seen.

One of Big […]

Horrified B-Movie Victims

Every Star Wars diorama I set up in my bedroom as a kid had the same problem — a lack of extras. Ships and starring roles were never a problem — I had plenty of those — but what I didn’t have were the dozens of extra Stormtroopers needed to make a convincing scene from […]
