Arcade Games and Saber Tooth Tigers

This is going to sound stupid, but nothing makes me feel cooler than hauling arcade games around on the back of my truck. So many collectors never get to show off their collections to outsiders — and when they do, typically it’s done online. Seeing pictures of someone’s collection can be kind of neat, seeing an item in real life is much cooler, in my opinion. I’ve never been hunting so I don’t really know what it’s like to take down a big animal or anything, but … I don’t know, I have this visual image of a caveman returning… (read more)

The Death of a Bootleg Concert Video Collection

The first bootleg VHS recording of a concert I ever owned came from a local flea market. While digging through a pile of video tapes at Old Paris Flea Market back in the mid 1990s, I found a VHS recording of a Pantera concert that had taken place at the Diamond Ballroom (a show I had actually attended). The tape was priced at $20, but for $30 I got that one and a second tape (Metallica’s 1992 Oklahoma City show). That’s how it all started for me. While fan-made audio recordings of concerts have been around for as long as… (read more)

Oklahoma City Roller Derby

Roller_Derby_2012-03-17 When our Saturday evening suddenly became open (after Gallagher suffered a heart attack earlier in the week and cancelled his Oklahoma performance), we decided to go with Plan B and go see a Roller Derby bout for the first time instead. Like most people, what little I knew about Roller Derby came from watching it on television back in the 1980s. Roller Derbies actually date back to the 1880. although back then they were simply roller skating competitions of speed and endurance. Roller Derby as we know it didn’t evolve until the 40s and 50s. At that time it… (read more)

Unboxing the iPad 3 video (with Mason)

I’m getting too old to camp outside of a retail store in hopes of getting a brand new toy. Despite the fact that people have been lined up for a week outside several Apple stores in hopes of picking up a brand new iPad 3 on launch day, I was able to buy one at Walmart, also on launch day. Walmart had the exact model I wanted (32GB, black, WiFi) and there was no line at all; Susan and I were literally in and out of the store within 5 minutes. Since “unboxing” videos are all the rage, Mason and… (read more)

On With The Show

The two highlights of my week this week happened after work at the Yukon auditorium. Tuesday evening, Mason’s school performed a musical consisting of songs from the 50’s and 60’s. The kids performed songs originally written and performed by the Beatles, Elvis, Little Richard, and the Beach Boys. Mason wore a white t-shirt, blue jeans, and a leather jacket. Although he was a little disappointed that he was not chosen for one of the characters or speaking roles, Mason held his head up high and did a great job in his supporting role. Thursday evening, Morgan’s school performed an abbreviated… (read more)

Anonymous, LulzSec … Meet the FBI.

Some of you may remember me walking about LulzSec last year. For those who don’t, LulzSec was a hacking group that splintered off from Anonymous and made a name for themselves by creating widespread havoc across the Internet over the past year. LulzSec has been involved in several high profile hacks including the hacking of Sony, Fox.com, InfraGard and most recently Stratford, to name just a few. When bored, the group launched DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks against (and successfully knocked offline) such websites as CIA.gov and FAA.gov. When security consultants Black & Berg Cybersecurity Consulting offered a $10k… (read more)

Puppets, Please Exit Stage Right

Like most young kids (I’m assuming here — maybe I was just a weirdo), I owned several puppets when I was younger. Unlike most kids I probably had more than the average kid, and I still have most of them out in my garage. If you’ve been reading this blog for more than a week, this should not surprise you. Last summer I stopped by a church garage sale and picked up some puppets. I bought them because they were really professional looking and really well made. I only own one other puppet that looks anything like these puppets; it… (read more)
