Retiring the CloudFTP

CloudFTP Device

I find it easier to throw away big things than small things. Small things can always be shoved into a drawer, placed on a shelf, or tossed into a closet. And when it comes to technical gadgets it’s often the small things cost big bucks, which makes some of these things more difficult to part with. CloudFTP was a wireless device that launched on Kickstarter back in 2012. The small box served as a tiny web/FTP server that contained a USB port and was powered by a rechargeable battery. Any files stored on the attached USB stick could be accessed… (read more)

Three New Lunchboxes in Three Weeks

National Airlines Lunchbox

Over the past three weeks, I’ve added three new (vintage) lunchboxes to my collection. I recently began looking for some wall shelves for my future office. Hopefully I can get them made and on the wall soon; I’m dying to get my lunchboxes out of storage and put them back on display! — National Airlines (1968) – $45 Released as a promotional item in 1968, this lunchbox features a National Airlines crew standing in front of a plane on one side, and a National Airlines plane in flight on the other. The women in this picture are wearing some kind… (read more)

Guns N’ Roses Live: Five Times a Charm

Two weeks ago, I saw Guns N’ Roses live in concert for the fifth (and perhaps final time). I had some strong thoughts about the band’s performance immediately after the show, and wanted to give myself a little bit of time to see if my opinion would soften at all. Of the five times I’ve seen Guns N’ Roses perform live, four have been with our friends Tim and Dawn Novosad. The four of us first saw the band perform live back in 2011 in Norman, OK. In 2012, we all went to Vegas (for the Novosad’s anniversary) and saw… (read more)

Weezer/Pixies (BOK Center, 03/37/19)

I’m behind on my blogging. Actually, I’m behind on everything. If you like Venn diagrams, imagine a small circle labelled “blogging” inside a larger circle that says “everything.” The title of the diagram would be, “things I’m currently behind on.” Way back in January when I heard The Pixies were coming to the BOK Center in Tulsa, I immediately bought four tickets. The kids weren’t super-stoked about going to the show (“who the heck are The Pixies?”) until I told them that they were playing with Weezer. Then, then got excited. At some point in time after we purchased those… (read more)

A Break from Spring Break

Susan, her mom, and the kids are in Ireland this week for spring break, and I’m in Oklahoma. As I mentioned last week, I am wrapping up my novel for my final school project. If everything goes according to schedule, I’ll be turning my novel in during the second week of April, and defending it two weeks later (after the members of my committee have had time to read it). I started work on my novel last September, and over seven months, things have a way of changing. For example, one of my characters started the book with long blonde… (read more)

My Year in Review: A Look Back at 2017

Rob O'Hara, Susan O'Hara in casino

2017 was another great year for the O’Haras. Morgan turned 12, Mason turned 16, and Susan and I both turned 44. The country experienced an eclipse, Susan officiated her first wedding, we discovered not one but two snakes in our house, I found a ton of vintage VHS tapes containing tons of treasure, I bought a six-foot dragon skeleton to go with Mick Rib, I met Guy Hutchinson in person for the first time, we discovered an interesting Asian food market full of super hot Ramen noodles and live turtles, and Mason walked a 5K. (A bunch of crazy stuff… (read more)

Pretend Profits vs. True Profits

Yesterday I mentioned the concept of “pretend profits vs. true profits.” These are terms I made up to describe the discrepancy between how much money I thought I was making selling books vs. how little money I ended up making. (In reality, what we’re talking about is “net. vs. gross” income, but I like these terms better.) When I first began selling copies of Commodork, Lulu.com (the company that printed my copies) ran a sale. By ordering 30 copies, I could get the price of each one down to $5. I sell paperback copies of my books for $15. That… (read more)

Photon Paperback Books

I’ve written about Photon (the original Arena Laser Tag game) on my blog multiple times. I talked about the culture of Photon, my excitement when I learned that a new Photon center was opening just outside of Tulsa, Oklahoma and all about Jeff and my visit there. I also recorded a podcast episode of You Don’t Know Flack where I talked about Photon. One thing I’ve never talked about were the paperback series of Photon books. Despite being a huge fan of Photon, until I visited Jim Strother’s Photon arena in Tulsa I had no idea there even were Photon… (read more)

The Ghosts of Metadata

Metadata is defined as “a set of data that describes and gives information about other data.” Most people associate metadata with digital photos. When you take a picture with your iPhone for example, a lot of additional information is saved along with your photo. EXIF metadata includes the settings of your camera, like the shutter speed, whether or not you used a flash, and the focal length. GPS metadata includes the latitude, longitude, and altitude of where you took the picture. TIFF metadata stores information about the make and model of your camera, the picture’s original resolution, and any software… (read more)

The Heart of Rock and Roll is Still Beating

Huey Lewis and the News released their third album Sports in September, 1983. The album’s first two singles, “Heart and Soul” and “I Want a New Drug,” both cracked the top ten. The third single, “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” was a tribute to rock and roll. The song consists of three verses. The first two are each dedicated to specific cities while the third verse mentions ten more (one of which is Oklahoma City). That’s one of the things that caught my attention as a kid. I thought it was really cool that I lived in a city… (read more)
