The Gremlins Lunchbox Painting

Between my posts on The Retroist and Facebook some of you already know some of this story, but here’s the entire thing from beginning to end. A couple of weeks ago, I discovered Etsy.com. To clarify, I’ve known about Etsy for a year or two, I’ve just never really checked it out. Etsy is a place where normal people can set up their own virtual online shops and hawk their goods. Think of it like an eBay Store, but focused more more on homemade arts and crafts. Since I’ve been writing so much for the Retroist lately, I decided to… (read more)

Susan Saves a Bird

The four of us came home yesterday to find a wounded bird on our front porch. The bird had wiggled itself up against the house and was hiding under a pile of leaves. When Susan brushed it out we saw that it had a broken leg and a broken wing. I told the kids to leave it alone and go inside. About two hours later, we walked outside to find the bird lying on its back and screaming its head off. Other birds had gathered on our gutter and were perched there, watching the wounded bird scream. It was really… (read more)

Sun Valley Garage Sale Day 2012

Sun Valley (the neighborhood I grew up in) has been having an annual neighborhood garage sale day for as long as I can remember. And, for what it’s worth, I’ve been writing about them for as long as I’ve been blogging. As has been the tradition, the Friday night before Garage Sale Day, I hauled my golf cart over to Dad’s house and had it ready to go. I also took with me my small red trailer that I got last year at last year’s garage sale day, and a cooler full of ice and bottled water. A few hours… (read more)

Weight Loss Contest Begins Sunday

Sunday, Susan and I will be weighing in for the OKC Weight Loss Challenge. The contest is free to enter. Whoever loses the most amount of weight (percentage) over 12 weeks wins a car, among other perks. Official weigh-ins must take place at an authorized location here in the city (by appointment only), and you must weigh again 12 weeks later to the day. The first place winner will take home a 2012 Nissan Versa from Fenton Nissan. I have not yet decided if I will use it as my daily driver or sell it. I’ll let you know on… (read more)

The New Basketball Goal

The kids have completely assimilated to the new house. The other day I asked the kids what they missed most about our old house. Morgan said what she missed the most was that we used to live caddy-corner from her kindergarten teacher’s brother. That’s a hit I can take. Mason’s was a bit more legitimate; he missed our old basketball goal. Several of our neighbors at the new house have portable basketball goals. Most of them are standing next to people’s driveways, but a few of them are always laying nose-first in the dirt and I’ve considered asking those people… (read more)

Interactive Fiction: Random Nuggets

At last year’s Oklahoma Video Game Expo (OVGE), I officially debuted my first full-length text adventure. Hangar 22, written in Inform 6, was a light-hearted text-based work of interactive fiction that involved aliens, tacos, and a talking GPS that sounded like Sir Mix-A-Lot. Over the past 30 years lots of people have written lots of great (and lots of not-so-great) text adventures and works of interactive fiction, so completing one does not make me an expert or authority on the matter. I did, however, jot down a few notes about writing text adventures as I was working on the game.… (read more)

Cleaning out the Drafts

You may not believe this, but for all the things I post on robohara.com, there are lots of posts that never see the light of day. Some of those are completely finished posts that for one reason or another never get posted publicly. Sometimes it’s because I could never get the tone right. Some of them become outdated before I finish them. Then there are the articles that never get finished. Occasionally I’ll get halfway done writing one before realizing it’s just not going to work; other times, I’ll only write a sentence or two before dropping an idea. All… (read more)

Jack Tramiel (1928-2012)

Jack Tramiel once said “business is war,” and based on his track record, he must have meant it. He was said, “anybody who sells a product against me I would like to wipe out.” Jack Tramiel was ruthless in business. One of his first tasks at Atari was cutting his new staff of 1,200 employees down to 100 [1]. Chuck Peddle, Tramiel’s right hand man at Commodore, once said of the man, “he destroyed me, he destroyed my family, he did all kinds of terrible things” [2]. If Tramiel’s actions were considered ruthless, he had good reason; up until the… (read more)

Pre-Easter Egg Hunt

The last couple of years, the kids have attended the local Yukon Easter Egg Hunt. This year, this was the line to get in. They don’t really hide the eggs, as you can see in this next picture — they just kind of throw them out in the field and, when the siren goes off, the kids make a mad dash and collect all the eggs they can. The roped off areas were split into different age groups. Mason’s group, the 10-12 year olds, wasn’t very crowded. Morgan’s area (the 4-6 year old area) however looked like this: Each egg… (read more)

YDKF Episode 114: Arcade Auctions

Episode 114 of You Don’t Know Flack is all about Arcade Auctions. In this episode I talk about my experiences of buying arcade games at auctions. I share some tips and tricks of the trade, including what to bring, what to look for, and what to expect. I have been attending arcade auctions for almost 20 years, and have purchased around 70 arcade games from auctions during that time.
