Celebration Station

This weekend, Morgan and I attended a birthday party at Celebration Station which, if you’ve not been or don’t have one near you, is essentially a Chuck E. Cheese clone. They have pizza, arcade games, lots of outdoor activities, and animatronic … dogs. (Not my video.) Below are a few pictures I snapped at the party. Down the left-hand side of the arcade sat all the racing games, lined up and ready to go. And here are some of the shooting games. Upstairs, tucked away in the corner, were three pinball machines. The middle one was turned off, but I… (read more)

Falling Apart

Next month, I will be turning 39-years-old. I was hoping that my body wouldn’t fall apart until the age of 40, but it doesn’t look like that will be the case. It all started with some weird “finger tremors”. Occasionally, one of my fingers will just start twitching. Whenever they do this, they hurt like I’ve popped my knuckles too hard. After searching Google I was pretty sure I had Parkinson’s or something. The last time I saw a doctor, I mentioned it to him and he said, “sounds like carpel tunnel to me.” Then I told him it couldn’t… (read more)

Retroist Rewind (07-21-12)

Here’s a recap of the articles I wrote for Retroist.com this past week: Monday: I mentioned the 25th Anniversary of Madonna’s Who’s That Girl?, both of which were released in June of 1987. Tuesday: I posted some advice: Never Trust A Rancor, complete with six pictures that (I thought) were funny. Comments ranged from “I loved it!” to “How can I avoid reading anything else you write ever,” so … response was mixed. Friday: In honor of the new Batman film, I wrote about my Batman Green Machine, complete with a few pictures form when I was four-years-old. You can… (read more)

Three Changes to the Blog

01. I slightly increased the font size. A combination of (a) longer posts, (b) smaller screens, and (c) my failing eyesight are making the site more difficult to read. The font size is only about 1pt bigger, but I think it makes things more readable. 02. I changed the layout from 3 columns to 2. Everything that was over in the right column has been moved to the left. The additional width will make longer posts easier to read, and allow for larger pictures to be posted. Formerly, all my pictures were 440 pixels wide. From here on out, they’ll… (read more)

Why My Desk Looks Like This

Monday evening after hours I got a call informing me that one of our most important servers at work was offline. I’m not officially “on call” like I used to be years ago, but when something like this happens you throw your shoes back on and go see what’s up. What was “up” — or technically, what wasn’t “up”, was the server’s RAID card. No RAID card meant no hard drives. Being a relatively old server, I didn’t have any spares of the same make or model available at my disposal, and the RAID card was attached to the motherboard… (read more)

Eating at Five Guys for Free (My Charmed Life) #FiveGuys #OKC

One night last week while Susan and Mason were in Washington DC, Morgan and I had dinner at Schlotzsky’s. While there, we noticed a sign for a brand new Five Guys Burgers just across the street. “We’ll have to go there with Mommy and Mason next week,” we said. Unbeknownst to us, Susan and Mason actually tried going to a Five guys while in DC but, after being led to a bad address by Yelp, ended up eating somewhere else. Today while shopping on Northwest Expressway I mentioned the opening of the new Five Guys to Susan. Susan mentioned that… (read more)

Morgan’s Musical Mysteries

Three random musings from Morgan this week: 01. “I like that song Peaches and Lava.” I guess I had been listening to 80s music that morning. The song wasn’t “Peaches and Lava.” It was “Egyptian Lover.” 02. “I like that guy, Milli the Willie.” This one wasn’t too hard to figure out. The only real mystery to this one is, who has been forcing letting Morgan listen to Milli Vanilli? Not I. 03. “I like that song about the Smurfs.” I’ll admit, this was the toughest of the three to solve. After racking my brain, I could not think of… (read more)

Learning Sign Language

The following sentence was, in the original draft of this post, four paragraphs long. I have replaced those four paragraphs with the following sentence: “they recently changed our custodian at work, and the new one is deaf.” Most of the custodians at my work are either Hispanic or Asian, some of which speak little English. Just making up numbers, I’d guess half of our custodians speak conversational English, a fourth of them speak and understand enough English for me to communicate with, and a fourth I cannot communicate with. The margin of error on those numbers is +/- 20% at… (read more)

Commodork on the Virtual Shelf

Commodork reader Frank Burcaw recently e-mailed me the following screenshot from his iPad: I’m not sure how deserving my book is to sit on the same shelf with The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine and Jobs’ biography — even virtually — but I’m tickled nonetheless to see it there. Thanks again for sending me the picture, Frank! As a reminder, both of my books (Commodork: Sordid Tales from a BBS Junkie and Invading Spaces: A Beginner’s Guide to Collecting Arcade Games) are both available via Amazon or from this site as a DRM-Free PDF.

Retroist Rewind (7-6-12)

Here’s a recap of the articles I wrote for Retroist.com this past week: Monday: I featured the Easter Island Tissue Dispenser my Mom found for me at a garage sale. Tuesday: I compared two sets of drinking glasses from Target, Star Wars vs. Star Trek. Wednesday: (the 4th of July) I wrote a short tribute to my Dad’s old 1975 K5 Chevy Blazer. Thursday: I discussed Chuck E. Cheese’s new makeover. Friday: I talked about some Ghostbusters II Trading Cards I purchased. You can follow my Retroist posts by liking the Retroist on Facebook, following him on Twitter, or following… (read more)
