Easter (2019)

“I need to run to Walmart,” Susan said to me around six a.m., Easter morning. “The kids’ baskets look a little light this year.”

I hadn’t seen the kids’ Easter baskets yet — Susan took care of that this year, like she does every year. After putting a pan of brownies in the oven, she went to Walmart, and I went back to sleep.

Over the past twenty-four hours, Susan picked up hamburger meat, cooked a ham, made a cake, baked a pan of brownies, and made multiple runs to the store. By the time the kids woke up, each one had a basket overflowing with candy and trinkets waiting for them.

We had eight people come over for Easter lunch, which, including the four of us, made for twelve in all. From the drinks to the silverware and plates to the food and even the seating arrangements, Susan had thought of everything.

One of Susan’s favorite sayings is, “if you want something to happen, make it happen.” It’s definitely something she lives by, every day. Whether it’s a holiday dinner or a vacation to another country, once she finds something she wants, she makes it happen. It’s a mindset most of us could benefit from.

I hope everyone had a happy Easter. And thank you, Susie, for pulling ours together. You are appreciated.
