Enjoying our Extended Vacation

Earlier today Susan and I debated which day the two of us had gone to the theater to see The Rise of Skywalker. The more we talked, the more it became apparent that the real issue was that we weren’t sure what day today was. If vacations are intended to help you forget about work for a while, ours is definitely working.

The kids are out of school for two weeks for “winter break” and Susan took the entire time off as well. (I put “winter” in quotes because it still looks and feels like fall.) I took off the 23rd through the 1st, which, including holidays and weekends, gave me thirteen days off and only cost me six days worth of vacation. Totally worth it.

I got some really thoughtful Christmas gifts this year. My dad bought me a piece of artwork (a custom painted skate deck) we discovered while out shopping together, and my mom bought me a custom neon sign for my future movie room. Susan bought me an Arduino kit and a tiny robot, Mason gave me a book I mentioned wanting to read, and Morgan got me a work light for my future shop.

And… about the building. The last we had officially heard the guys were pushing to have it finished by Christmas so we were hoping to use some our vacation to begin moving things out there, but as the date approached it became obvious to us that wasn’t going to be the case. Workers have only come by one time during our vacation, so we’re hoping to see more activity in the new year. We broke ground in September, had dirt delivered in October, had the metal frame erected in the beginning of November and the sheeting and roof completed a few days before December. I’m hoping the building will be done in January or February but there’s still a lot to do so right now we don’t have an estimated delivery date. I guess it’ll be done when it’s done.

On New Year’s Eve, Susan and I are driving to Texas to the nearest Ikea (just over 200 miles away) to pick up some bookshelves for my new/future office. Yes they deliver, and yes there are places that sell bookshelves in Oklahoma, but this is more of an excuse to get out and hit the road for a few hours. We’re looking forward to having some Swedish meatballs for lunch and spending New Year’s Eve assembling furniture.

    Happy holidays!

I live in The Netherlands and my nearest Ikea is about 7 miles from my house. I can’t imagine driving 200 miles just to pick up a Billy closet. In fact, driving that distance would mean I’d be in a different country altogether :)
