Route 66: Leftover Bits and Pieces

Susan and I saw a lot of fun things along Route 66 post that didn’t quite warrant entire blog posts. To wrap up this week’s series of posts, here are a few of the odd and ends we saw along the way.

POPS 66

Pops is a restaurant located on Route 66 not far from I-35, and was one of the first things we saw along our route. It was too late for breakfast and too early for lunch when we passed Pops, but we did stop and pick out a couple of drinks from Pops selection of more than 1,000 flavors.

PAUL MCCARTNEY MARKER

In 2008, Sir Paul McCartney drove the length of Route 66, got lost, and stopped to ask for directions. At some point after that, someone put up a marker marking the spot where Paul McCartney stopped to ask for directions. This was one of Susan’s favorite stops. As you may be able to tell from the picture quality, I didn’t get out of the car.

66 BOWL

The Route 66 Bowl is an iconic bowling alley located on Route 66. The parking lot was filled with vintage signs. We didn’t have time for bowling and did not go inside, but we did stop and take a selfie in front of their sign in the parking lot. Maybe next time!

JOLLY GREEN GIANT

At a random thrift store, Susan spotted this Jolly Green Giant standing in the window so we took pictures in front of it.

DECOPOLIS DISCOVITORIUM

Next to Buck Atom’s Cosmic Curios on 66 is the Decopolis Discovitorium, a shop filled with many wonderful and mysterious things. If you’re looking for a store that stocks mystical crystals, books on Egyptology, fossils, and Harry Potter LEGO sets all under the same roof, this is your place. Outside the building were several dinosaur statues. In case you didn’t know, my wife has a thing about having her picture taken with statues while standing in the same pose as the statue.

THE OUTSIDERS HOUSE/MUSEUM

The Outsiders, the 1980s film by Francis Ford Coppola, was filmed in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The house used in the film has been turned into a museum that also contains memorabilia related to the film. We didn’t have time to visit the museum, but we did drive around it and snap a couple of photos, including this one.

Depending on the things we decided to stop and look at, our trip could have been entirely different. I’m looking forward to making this drive again in the near future and visiting some of the places we didn’t have time for on our last drive!
