It’s been a couple days since my last update so here’s where things stand as of Friday afternoon. For the record, I read my previous post to see where things had left off and I was shocked by how many typos were in it. Chalk that up to writing blog updates from my van combined with sheer exhaustion.
Last Sunday, Serve Pro estimated they would have fans and dehumidifiers in our house for three to five days, and they were here for all five days. The fans were loud and the heat was miserable, but ultimately they did their job and were able to save our kitchen cabinets, which is a huge relief. Tearing apart the entire kitchen would have been a nightmare.

On Wednesday I was halfway out the door for lunch when I doubled back inside momentarily and discovered people removing drywall. Ultimately, sections of drywall and parts of insulation were removed from the closet in my office, a wall in the laundry room, and one of the hall closets.
We’ve spent the past several days migrating back and forth, spending our days at the house and nights at a local hotel. I’ve been taking my laptop, my medicine, and a day’s worth of clothes back and forth with me every day. We’ve been meeting contractors at the house every day and it’s been too hot and loud to sleep here at night. I’ve felt a bit like a man without a country this week.

As of now, the water removal process is over. Two different contractors have come to assess the repairs and we’re waiting on quotes from both. The repairs will involve repairing drywall, painting walls, and installing baseboards. After that, the carpet people will come and install new carpet in our bedroom, bedroom, and closet. Today we were told that things need to come off the walls before the carpet people arrive, which is bad news more for me than Susan. Sometime in the middle of this we’ll be buying new bedroom furniture (our dressers and nightstands were ruined). They also say all seven of the display shelves in my home office were ruined, but the jury’s still out on that.
Thanks to everyone who offered to give us a place to stay or to lend a hand. There just wasn’t anything anyone could do for us, but the offers were appreciated. On Thursday we were able to turn our air conditioning back on and as of today (Friday), all the fans are gone and the temperature is back to normal. We’ll be spending the next week or so slowly moving things out to the garage or workshop preparing for the next phase. I’m not sure what the ultimate end date of all of this will be but early-to-mid November seems probable.
Well as far as the damage, “ the beginning of the end”
Still a lot to do, but you’ve made a huge dent in it.
It’s going to be OK ……hugs
