Blowout on the Motorcycle

Not a tire. My shirt.

This morning I decided since it was going to be such a nice day, I’d ride my motorcycle to work. I was wearing my “flame shirt” (a black polyester/rayon shirt with a firey print) with a white t-shirt underneath. Right as I got on the highway I felt the rear of my shirt begin flapping in the breeze. I reached back and tucked it in (I do this a lot anyway — if I don’t, I end up mooning everyone I pass). Usually this isn’t a problem, and the wind just passes through. Because of this shirt’s material, this shirt began inflating itself instead.

As I passed an 18-wheeler, I felt a “pop”. I reached back with my left hand and felt my shirt flapping in the breeze. I didn’t realize the extent of the damage until I pulled over and checked. The entire left hand side of my shirt, from the bottom up to the sleeve, had ripped apart due to the wind. On top of that, the back side of both sleeves ripped open due to the amount of wind funneling through my shirt. The entire shirt is now pretty much shredded. It would take half a roll of duct tape to fix it.

Fortunately for me I left my hooded sweatshirt out in the van yesterday, which is what I just changed into.
